Why 2 GB is the number everyone hits
A 2 GB limit comes from older file systems and software that store sizes in 32 bits, and many free transfer tools kept it as a convenient cap. Modern phones and cameras easily produce files beyond it: ten minutes of 4K video, a disk image, a game build or a database dump.
The practical answer is a service built for large objects: chunked uploads, resumable transfers and storage that treats a 5 GB file like any other.
File size limits by plan
upload.am sets a maximum file size per plan, not per format. The values below are the current limits; see the pricing page for the live table.
- Free: 5 GB per file, 25 GB storage.
- Keep: 5 GB per file, 25 GB storage.
- Plus: 20 GB per file, 1 TB storage.
- Premium: 100 GB per file, 2 TB storage.
- Premium GOLD: 300 GB per file, 5 TB storage.
- Teams share a pool of 1, 5 or 20 TB with the same per-file caps.
How to send a big file reliably
Size is only half of the problem; reliability is the other half. A few habits make large transfers painless:
Use a stable connection
A wired connection or strong Wi-Fi beats a phone hotspot for multi-gigabyte uploads.
Keep the tab open
Do not let the computer sleep. If the connection drops, the upload resumes.
Zip many small files
One archive transfers faster than thousands of tiny files.
Split extremely large files
If a single file is above your plan, split the archive into parts.
Verify with the recipient
Tell them the file name and size so they know what to expect.
Set a lifetime
A large file should not live on a public link forever. Use a lifetime.
Upload without downloading first: remote upload
If the big file is already on another server, you do not need to pull it to your computer and push it again. Use remote upload from a URL: paste a direct link and our servers fetch it into your cloud storage in the background.
Backup and sync for large files
Large files are the ones you least want to lose or copy twice. The Windows app backs up the folders you choose and keeps them in live sync with your cabinet, so a project folder with large media is always in two places. Share from the cabinet whenever you need a link.
How to send a file over 2 GB in four steps
-
1
Drop the file
Drag it onto the upload box. The size is checked before the upload starts.
-
2
Let it upload
Keep the tab open. If the connection drops, the upload resumes.
-
3
Set the link options
Add a password or a lifetime if the file is sensitive.
-
4
Share the link
Send it to the recipient, who downloads from a clean page with resumable downloads.
