Why photos lose quality when you send them
Most chat apps re-compress images to save data, so a 12 MB photo becomes a few hundred kilobytes. Email clients may do the same when they resize images for you. The picture still looks fine on a phone screen, but print sizes, crops and edits suffer.
Sending a link to the original file avoids all of that. The photo is stored and delivered as is, including its resolution and metadata.
Which photo formats you can send
Any image format can be uploaded: JPEG, PNG, HEIC, WebP, TIFF and camera RAW formats such as CR3, NEF and ARW. The in-browser gallery previews common formats; other formats are still shared and downloadable in full. The free plan allows 5 GB per file and 25 GB in total, which holds thousands of photos.
Good ways to share photos
Pick the approach that fits the situation:
A wedding or event
Upload the finals in a folder and share the folder link. As you add pictures, the link stays up to date. Use a Drop Room to let guests add their own shots.
A client proof gallery
Send selects behind a password and set a lifetime so the proofing window closes by itself.
Family albums
One link per trip, shared in the family chat, with a gallery everyone can open on any device.
Real estate and product shots
Deliver high-resolution sets with a single link and ZIP.
Portfolio hand-over
Give a client a branded portal with every delivery in one place.
Collecting photos from others
Ask guests to send theirs through an Upload Inbox.
Back up the photos you send
Photos are the files people regret losing most. upload.am is also a backup and sync service: the Android app copies photos, video, audio and contacts from your phone, and the Windows app can back up your photo folders. The pictures you send are already in your cloud account, with versions and trash, so an accidental delete is not final.
Tips for faster, smoother photo transfers
- Upload over Wi-Fi when you can, and keep the tab open until the upload finishes.
- Group files in folders before sharing, so the gallery makes sense.
- Use a ZIP for very large sets when the recipient will download everything.
- Turn on the download notification to know when the client has picked them up.
